Bronze Lough Gur Shield of Light Brooch. Humans have lived near Lough Gur in Co.Limerick since about 3000 B.C and there are numerous megalithic remains in the area. The Lough Gur shield which was discovered in the lake (likely as an offering) is a Yetholm-type shield. It is a distinctive type of shield dating from 1200-800 BC, Bronze Age Ireland. The original shield is on display in the National Museum of Ireland located in Dublin.
