Knot-work

The Book contains the four Gospels in latin and is famous for it’s lavish and colourful decorative text and drawings. The knotwork designs show how each loop is individual yet cannot be separated from the whole and so has become a symbol of our oneness with creation. The Book originates from a monastery founded in the year 561 by St. Colum Cille on the island of Iona off the west coast of Scotland. After a Viking raid in 806, the monks took refuge in a new monastery at Kells in County Meath, and the book is now on display in Trinity College, Dublin.
